At my school there's an annual semi-formal dance in late spring or around early June. Do you think it would be appropriate to wear a vintage 1950's swing dress? Let me know opinions or advice - Thanks!

Just looking for what to wear? I talked with a couple of people and apparently a suit may be too much for this semi-formal? So I'm looking at just a shirt with tie and pants? I did have a similar question posted before, but I'm looking for more and different answers this time since I think I may not wear a full suit.

Wow, things sure have changed since I was in school. To me ...semi-formal means guys wear a suit & tie. But I guess in school it could be different. (?)

Ask around and see what the other guys are wearing. Not the guys who are (cough) too cool to wear a tie...More importantly..ask your date what she is wearing. If she is wearing a beautiful cocktail dress, I would say wear dress pants, dress shirt and tie. You don't want her looking very nice and you looking very casual. If she is wearing a "regular" dress, a nice pair of pants and a button down, long sleeve shirt would be ok...tie optional or you could even wear a sweater over your shirt.

Whatever you do wear...make sure you have nice, clean shoes on. There is nothing worse than seeing someone dressed nicely and looking down to see old, worn out dirty shoes on their feet. It just ruins everything. Make sure your belt is nice looking too and matches your shoes. (brown belt w/ brown shoes, black w/black, etc)

As far as colors go...you can't go wrong with black pants. Any color shirt will match and look nice but I would go with a long sleeved solid, not printed shirt. It's just a little more dressier looking.

I'm really sorry...I'm still having a hard time with semi-formal not meaning semi-formal...lol. I would guess the girls are going to be pretty "done up" and if that is the case and no other guys are wearing suits, I would strongly suggest wearing a tie. If nobody is wearing a tie, at least wear the solid, long sleeved button down dress shirt..tucked in and you could think about a nice looking sweater.

FOR MY OWN SANITY I HAD TO LOOK UP WHAT SEMI-FORMAL MEANS NOW....and sure enough...it means what it did back when I was in school and is as follows:

The term semi-formal for men means a good quality dark suit including a tie of same tint, white shirt, dark socks, and black shoes.

I am going to a semi formal winter dance for school and I need to know what to wear and how to do my hair. It need to be winter clothing!! Please Help!!

saw this dress at macys.com...think something like this would be perfect short and shimmery gold!
for your hair i would do an up do, curls tend not to hold through a night of dancing...and if you go to a beauty school it won't cost so much $$$

I think you can never go wrong with black and white. This dress would look good because it's not too long (a long dress would look silly since you are on the shorter side) and I think you could pull it off even with a smaller bust. gojane.com has lots of other cute, inexpensive dresses, but this is one of my faves.

I have recently had a baby so my body is quite bumpy still and I have been invited to a wedding and don't know what to wear.

I don't want to be uncomfortable all night due being self conscious about tummy bumps, large breast and fat arms.

The wedding is semi-formal day wedding with reception in the evening.

I dont know where to shop, but being plus sized as well, try an "a" line skirt or something that sort of flares away from the bottom a little. Also, I'd try empire waist, or where it cinches in under your breasts and them flows away from your tummy. It will hide any imperfections while making your breasts look more "up there". As for the arms, try a short sleeve dress. Straps will make them look bigger. Try a small print. Anything big just makes you look bigger. and opt for flats.

so for our 8th grade promotion we're having a semi-formal dance and the theme is mardi gras. I didn't know this until recently and i already bought a dress for a promotion. it's light turquoise with gold waist band and glittery things on it. it's strapless and im not sure we're allowed to wear that. i don't know if i should just wear that dress cuz it was expensive and i dont have that much money right now. Also, what kind of accessories should i wear?

A cute little dress. Especially since its Easter time now, you'll be able to find plenty in any department store.

I was going to wear a nice dressy top with a pair of black capri jeans and high heels. I'm not sure if that's semi formal??

I would recommend against wearing black capri jeans at a semi-formal party because they are quite casual. The dressy top sounds nice but I would recommend pairing it with a skirt or some dress pants. Definitely keep the heels as that would give a bit more classy flair to your outfit. Also, remember to accessorize lightly. Something simple like earrings and a bracelet would look very elegant with the outfit.

We got invited to a "semi-formal cocktail hour" at the law school my husband will attend this fall. What is appropriate to wear? Thanks!

you could wear a 'little black dress' or a nice skirt and a blouse, and your husband should wear a suit but maybe ditch the jacket if nobody else is wearing one.
